Educational Attainment of Women in Nigeria

We analysed the Demographic and Health Survey, 2013, to discover that 48.3% of young women aged 15 – 24 in northern Nigeria have no formal education. This figure rises to over 57% of young women having no education when you exclude the north central region which encapsulates Benue, Federal Capital Territory, Kwara, Kogi, Nassarawa, Niger and Plateau states.

Africa Check, an independent fact-finding organisation cites religious and cultural beliefs, insecurity and poverty, as some of the factors contributing to poor and inadequate access to formal education in these regions.
